Strasburg needs Tommy John surgery

The Washington Nationals received the dreaded news they hoped would never come when it was discovered that pitcher Stephen Strasburg will need Tommy John surgery.

The surgery is expected to sideline the pitcher for anywhere from 12-18 months, meaning he would miss all of next season.

The good news is that a lot of pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery these days do ultimately make a full recovery and go on to have productive careers.

Strasburg said that he is very disappointed in the news but is already looking forward to the process of rehabbing his elbow and coming back better than ever. (Read More…)

Strasburg hurt again

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg hurt his forearm and was removed from his latest start.

It was only Strasburg’s third start since coming off of the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

The team has termed the new injury to be a strained forearm and is awaiting results of an MRI to determine the course of action.

It’s highly likely that the team will place Strasburg back on the disabled list no matter what the MRI says. (Read More…)

Nationals sign Harper

The Washington Nationals have signed top overall pick Bryce Harper to a contract just before the deadline.

Harper received a five-year contract worth just under $10 million. That means Harper’s path to the major leagues will have to be rather quick to avoid exposure to waivers.

It was pretty much a given that Harper’s signing was going to come down to the very last minute, but they Nationals certainly cut it close.

Many believe Harper is as close to a sure thing as it gets, with some projecting at least a 500 home run career. (Read More…)

Strasburg reports no pain following scratched start

A few days after being scratched from his scheduled start and being placed on the disabled list, Washington Nationals rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg reported no pain or discomfort after throwing for the first time since then.

Strasburg was scratched just minutes before he was to take the mound against the Atlanta Braves on July 29. He said he was unable to get loose, and with the franchise taking no chances with its star of the present and future, decided to sit him. (Read More…)

Strasburg scratched but Nats down Braves anyway

By Bud L. Ellis

The crowd at Nationals Park booed lustfully when Stephen Strasburg did not climb the bump for his scheduled start Tuesday night against Atlanta.

But emergency starter Miguel Batista and three relievers had the masses cheering before long. Batista fired five scoreless innings against the NL East leaders, and three relievers kept the goose-eggs coming as Washington downed the Braves 3-0. (Read More…)

Nationals looking to deal Capps

The Washington Nationals would love to deal closer Matt Capps before the July 31 trade deadline.

Capps is having the best season of his career and is the perfect example of selling high.

The team also would save a lot of money as Capps could cash in during salary arbitration in the offseason.

It’s highly unlikely Washington would want to pay Capps six or seven million dollars next year. (Read More…)

Strasburg wins again as Nats top Cincy

By Bud L. Ellis

He wasn’t as dominant. He didn’t hit double-digits in strikeouts. His ERA actually went up.

But Stephen Strasburg did what the Washington Nationals needed on Wednesday. He won.

The rookie phenom improved to 5-2 on the season, riding a strong offensive showing to an 8-5 victory at Cincinnati. (Read More…)

Zimmerman is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery and went four innings in his latest rehab start.

A former top prospect in the organization, the Nationals still have high hopes for the young flame-thrower. (Read More…)

Washington Nationals midseason review

The Washington Nationals may be in last place in the division, but they are one of baseball’s biggest surprises.
